Poole Dolphins SAC
Open Boat Cod & Flounder Competition 2007
The day started cool but bright without a breath of wind – and stayed that way all day.
182 keen anglers booked in at Poole Sea Angling Centre from 7.30am onwards. 107 were booked to fish on the 15 charter boats entered, the other 75 would be fishing from small private boats.
So good was the weather that all of the charter boats decided to fish outside Poole Harbour and as a result no flounders were entered for the Charter Boat Flounder prize.
After a quick committee decision it was decided to divide the total prize money of £1500 between the three remaining categories. The optional pool money amounted to £89 each for best flounder and best cod.
At the close, 17 cod were weighed in plus 5 flounders qualifying over the minimum 2lb size requirement.
The winners were:
Best small boat cod – Steve Lane – 11lb 1oz
Best small boat flounder – C Selby – 3lb 8½oz
Best charter boat cod – V Allen – 19lb 14oz
Best charter boat flounder – No fish weighed in.
Third prize in the small boat flounder category went to junior entrant Stuart Lane and in keeping with the Poole Dolphins policy of encouraging youngsters a further prize was awarded to junior member Charlie Cheeseman for his flounder.
Due to the generosity of sponsors ABU and in particular Poole Sea Angling Centre, everyone who weighed in received a prize!
The prizes were presented by newly elected Chairman of Poole Dolphins, Nick Bainton.
Thanks are due to Andy Robbins of Poole Angling Centre and ABU for generous sponsorship, Ade and Lynne Chard of the Marina Club for hospitality and food, and all members of Poole Dolphins Sea Angling Club who helped to make this an undoubted success. See you all in May for the Poole Dolphins Open Boat Bream competition.
